How to See if Your Hamster Is Definitely Tame

You may be able to hold your hamster safely, but do they actually know you're safe?

Scoop up your hamster and hold it like normal. You may frighten it if you grab it from above, as in the wild, birds come down to eat hamsters! IF your hamster;

Runs away, then it is rather afraid of you!

Lets you scoop it up, you've got a tame hamster!

Tips

  • Try not to torment your hamster. It may learn that you are unsafe and/or scary!
  • Make it feel safe, trying daily to hold it gently, making it realise you're not a predator.
  • Hold dwarfs regularly - they can become untame
  • Get them at 6-8 weeks old, otherwise they will stay untame.

Warnings

  • Hamsters usually excrete on you. This also happens if you've just woken it up, it's young, or you hold it too long (usually associated with dwarfs).
  • If you hold your fingers in an offering sort of way, it may mistake you for food.
  • Usually syrians will bite you if they're untame.
